    What Is Midjourney v6?

Midjourney is an AI image generation tool that creates stunning visuals from text descriptions. Version 6 represents a massive leap forward in photorealism, text rendering, and prompt understanding. Whether you're a designer, marketer, or hobbyist, Midjourney v6 can produce images that rival professional photography and illustration.

    Getting Started

Midjourney runs through Discord. First, create a Discord account if you don't have one. Then visit midjourney.com and join the Midjourney Discord server. Subscribe to a plan (starting at $10/month for Basic) to begin generating images. Once subscribed, you can use the /imagine command in any Midjourney channel or in direct messages with the Midjourney bot.

    Your First Prompt

Type /imagine followed by your description. Start simple: /imagine a cozy coffee shop on a rainy day, warm lighting, watercolor style. Midjourney will generate four image variations. Use the U buttons (U1-U4) to upscale your favorite, or the V buttons (V1-V4) to create variations of a specific image.

    Prompt Engineering Basics

Good prompts follow a structure: Subject + Details + Style + Lighting + Camera. For example: "A majestic owl perched on an ancient oak tree, golden hour lighting, photorealistic, shot on Canon EOS R5, shallow depth of field." The more specific you are, the better your results will be.

Avoid negative phrasing ("don't include") as Midjourney responds better to positive descriptions. Instead of "a room without furniture," say "an empty room with bare walls and hardwood floors."

    Essential Parameters

Parameters are added at the end of your prompt with double dashes:

    • --ar 16:9 - Set aspect ratio (16:9 for landscapes, 9:16 for portraits, 1:1 for squares)
    • --v 6 - Specify version (v6 is the latest)
    • --q 2 - Quality setting (higher = more detail, slower generation)
    • --s 750 - Stylize value (0-1000, higher = more artistic)
    • --c 50 - Chaos value (0-100, higher = more varied results)
    • --no text - Exclude specific elements

    Advanced Techniques

Image prompts: Upload an image URL before your text prompt to use it as a reference. This is powerful for maintaining consistent characters or styles across multiple generations.

Multi-prompts: Use :: to separate concepts and weight them. "cat::2 astronaut::1" gives more emphasis to the cat element. You can combine up to 25 multi-prompts.

Permutation prompts: Use curly braces for variations: "a {red, blue, green} car" generates three separate images.

    Best Practices for Photorealistic Results

For photorealistic images, include camera and lens specifications, lighting conditions, and technical details. A prompt like "editorial photography of artisan bread, shot on Hasselblad, natural window light, f/2.8, golden hour" will produce dramatically more realistic results than simply "bread photo."

    Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don't make prompts too long—quality drops after about 60 words. Don't mix conflicting styles in one prompt. Don't forget to experiment with parameters—they can dramatically change results. And don't compare early attempts to experienced users' work—prompt engineering is a skill that improves with practice.

    Where to Find Inspiration

Browse the Midjourney community showcase for inspiration and prompt ideas. Websites like PromptHero and Lexica aggregate AI-generated images with their prompts. Join Midjourney subreddits and Discord communities to learn from others and share your work.
